The Fun Pho Hoa Event - Dorchester Social & Dorchester LGBT

Had fun exploring another restaurant with both the Dorchester Events Group and Dorchester LGBT Group. On Sunday September 14th it was the Pho Hoa Restaurant at 1370 Dorchester Ave. I had reserved a table for 8 but it appeared that there were only 4 of us to arrive. We were surprised later, by one late arrival and two unexpected attendees. You guessed it.  7 total attendees and possible some reasonable frustrated host watching us change tables several times.  Luckily there was plenty of room.

Had fun. Great conversation mixed with reasonable priced tasty food and a beautiful atmosphere with a pleasant glow. My pork chop meat loaf combination dish was great, but I definitely have to come back to try a large bowl of seafood soup.  Looked good and was large enough to carry some home for a second helping.

The First Dorchester Volunteer Event

For the first Dorchester LGBT and Dorchester Events volunteer event we distributed food at the American Red Cross - Saturday September 13th . It was fun to give my time and energy to a great volunteer driven organization in Dorchester MA. Four things I loved the most:

1. Seeing who the food goes to and seeing that it's appreciated.
2. Easy work that is really needed.
3. Being around others and sharing stress-free enthusiasm for accomplishing the same goal.
4. Meeting new people from all over Boston- (mainly college students)

Afterward we enjoyed food at Victoria's right across the street. I simple had a hamburger and french fries.  The hamburger was a great, but the fries were awesome. I was also informed by the waitress that every item on the menu was served all day.  One of these days I'm going to have try an evening breakfast.

Our next volunteer experience at the Red Cross is set for Saturday, October 4th. 8 to 12PM. Looking forward to it. RSVP at or Thank you Peter Hubbard for inviting us to have this experience. Interested in volunteering at the Red Cross?  Volunteers are needed on Wednesdays and Saturdays starting at 8:15AM.  No registration, just show up and sign in.

Upham's Corner Street Festival 2014

Upham's Corner Street Festival August 16th 2014. Compared to last years festival event, I have to say this one had more consistent size crowd throughout. Things that are new included the Up Truck and Liberty Tax Services giving away free food, showing their current clients appreciation by allowing them to be served first. In addition, this year the street festival was lead by Justin with the assistance of the former organizer Max McCarthy.

Paint Castle Island - A Dorchester Social and LGBT Group Event

Paint Castle Island was one the best events of the year. It was hosted at Castle Island in South Boston MA. The idea for the event was to get a few individuals interested in painting or in just meeting new people while enjoying the atmosphere.  Arrivals could have the option of painting on paper or collaborating on a larger canvas.  I invited the Dorchester Social group, the Dorchester LGBT group and the LGBT Family Fun group.

This was a somewhat hard event to organize and I was definitely worried about the cost.  Only days before did I finally purchase enough paints for about 20 from the art supply store Blick.  More than 100$ for a bucket of white and what looked like about a half gallon each of black, blue, red and yellow. The canvas, which was just 4 X 8 Ft plywood only cost about 13$. The only issue with that was fitting in my van without braking it.

Unfortunately only 3 others arrived for the event.  Marc, my mom and Christine.  Fortunately, we all love painting and good conversation so it made for a great time.  One things I could have done better.

1. Was too busy doing to many other things and forgot to leave my contact information for the Dorchester Social Group.  No one could call me to cancel or to tell me they weren't sure where we were.  Also my phone died and my car battery died.  I had a few people mention not being able to make it days after.  However Christine and another member waited for sometime before finding me.

Marc took some beautiful images with is phone that evening.  You have to join the group to see the rest. The image above is one of my favorites.

Walking Carson Beach - Event with the Dorchester LGBT Group

The Dorchester LGBT Group or

Had fun walking Carson Beach for the first time with the Dorchester LGBT Group July 10th 6PM.  4 of us met at Star Market near JFK Station. By 6:30PM after making sure everyone had what they needed for food, we took off from Star Market to Carson Beach.

We met up with two other members later in the evening.  All together, there were six of us.  10 were RSVPed so 60% showed up.  I'm considering attendance for this event a success.

I came to this event with the intention of snapping lots of photos.  Not only did I want photos of the Dorchester LGBT Group, but I also wanted photos of the Cambridge Boston Volley Ball Association.  I found out about this organization through my friend Chris.  The CBVA welcomes gay, straight, men, women, black, white, everyone to play volley ball. They are normally in Cambridge for the winter season but play at Joe Moakley Park near JFK station for the summer season Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Unfortunately, I was too late to take photos, but did get to introduce myself to John who I had previously conversed with via a few comments on about the CBVA.

The Dorchester LGBT Group has a Date with The Welcoming Committee

On the morning of June 30th, I just realized the Welcoming Committee was coming to Dorchester Masssachusetts.  I was already familiar with this organization and its objective of venturing into spaces that are not typically LGBT destination.   On July 1st 6:30PM, they were going to Tavolo's.

I was excited and moved as quickly as I could to notify members of the Dorchester LGBT group; however, it was too late. I went, but I went alone

It felt different.  It was the first time in months I had been to an event where I didn't know 1 person there.  I arrived early and sat at the bar watching the socker game on t.v. along with the bar tender and everyone else there on what started out to be a slow night.  Then very slowly at first, organizers of the Welcoming Committee started to arrive. Then guest after guest poured in.  It was a very young crown. 20s 30s.

I definitely had fun and stayed busy to the point where I didn't stop to take one photo. There must have been 50 or 60 people there that night walking around in our reserved space, foot steps from the bar. When I left the group had not started to shrink.  Some guests had already left, but they were replaced with new faces I did not see walk in.

I will be keeping a closer eye on the Welcoming Committee and will definitely try to plan a 2nd date.

The Dorchester LGBT Pride Event

Wanted to get together and have some fun celebrating pride on Saturday June 14th 2014.  I knew I would miss the pride parade because I was working that day until 6:30PM.  So, I decided to host an events for myself and others that were working that day. While there were plenty of events happening around Boston, I wanted to make sure there was something for the LGBT community in Dorchester.

3 days before the event at Mi Casa Tu Casa at 299 Handcock St. Dorchester MA I hung up about 15 8X10 signs with a brand new link leading to the group.  I do not beleive these signs received much response. Were were at 125 when the signs went up and now we're at 127.  This seems like the slow normal growth of the group.

The event was fun.  Although it was just 4 of us and all people I had met before, I had a really good time. It was great getting to know Chris, Ricky and Keith a little bit more than I knew them already. The dinning room that night seemed to be lead by one woman handling the register, serving the food and busing the tables. The tacos I had were great.  Wish I would have ordered more than two and also wish I would have asked for a fork. I'm not a big guy, but I had a big appetite that night.

Looking forward to visiting Mi Casa Tu Casa again, but this will not be for some time.  The Dorchester LGBT Group still has plenty of places in Dorchester to explore.  I want to learn about all the great venues available in Dorchester MA.

This event was also suppose to be about sharing all things we're proud of.  I tried to get people to bring in photos or items that represent their pride.  It didn't work out like I planned. Still, I wanted to share this painting.  Although I am far from being even a good painter I take pride in my efforts towards creating something beautiful.

Please comment and let me hear whatever thought you have about art, the Dorchester LGBT Group or whatever it is you have on your mind.
